Remis

Dear Mother and Father,
How are you? I am fine as are the children. I can hardly think how the taxes must be affecting the farm. I know here the people are being taxed to near death. The peoples tithe is getting smaller, and the need for the church’s help is growing constantly, but the people give all they can, God bless them for that. There is little enough food to go around let alone food to send to the city to sell, and God hasn’t sent the manna of his people in quite some time now. I know although he will protect us as long as we keep faith.

Its no small wonder though that the country is in such debt Marie Antoinette seems to think that it is a sin to wear any garb twice. No matter if it is a dress entwined with gold or a fine silk scarf for Africa. She has a constant cycle; she buys it, wears it, and locks it in one of her closet somewhere. Even if the king were a financial genius, which I assure you he is not, he could not afford her enormous spending habits. A man is supposed to control his wife but rumor have it she perhaps should turn in her dresses for a pair of pants.

Thibaut, the oldest of the orphans, has been his normal quiet self at home, yet he has gotten into several fights at school, which of course is a great cause for concern. This is an awful occurrence, yet I couldn’t help but smile when one of the other parents from the community thanked me for raising such a morale boy, as the boys he had fought were notorious bullies.

Mark is going to start school this coming year and I know he will excel. He can already read. I have been teaching him from the Lord’s book. Olive is a bustle of activity. She’s always running this way and that, making sure she is the center of attention.

Anyway I’m sure times will get no easier, at least not under the control of Louis, or another king such as he. A radical change is necessary and I have a strong feeling that the anger of the peasants, combined with their hunger will bring about one very french revolution soon.

Oh well, whatever part in this I choose to play will be under the direct counsel of God, the only one who really knows what’s going on these days.

Love and God bless,
Jean
